Lithuania was the official currency of Lithuania before the introduction of the euro - it was introduced on June 25, 1993, replacing the Lithuanian tauron, and was used until December 31, 2014. After the introduction of the euro, Lithuanian litas could be exchanged for euro at the National Bank of Lithuania and in some commercial banks for a certain period - the exchange of litas for euro was possible for a longer period at the National Bank of Lithuania even after the end of the period of the litas as the official currency. The name comes from the Latin word litus, which means shore or coast.
